What is white label marketing? How agencies actually use it

White label marketing is when one company does the marketing work and another company sells it under its own brand. For agencies, it is how you sell more services than your team can deliver, without hiring.

White label marketing, in plain terms

A client hires your agency for SEO. Instead of an in-house SEO doing the work, a specialist partner runs the audit, writes the content, builds the links, and prepares the monthly report. The report goes out with your logo, from your email, in your voice. The client never sees the partner. That's white label marketing.

The name comes from manufacturing, where a factory makes an unbranded ("white label") product and a retailer puts its own label on it. Supermarket own-brand cereal is the classic example. Marketing services work the same way, except the product is labour and expertise instead of cereal.

How the arrangement works

There are three parties, and each has a clear job:

  1. The client buys a service from your agency and pays your retail price.
  2. Your agency sells the service, owns the relationship, sets the strategy with the client, and pays the partner a wholesale rate.
  3. The white label partner does the fulfillment under your brand. A good partner works inside your tools, never contacts your client directly, and strips its own name from every file, report, and dashboard.

The money works like any resale business. Take our own SEO Growth plan as an example: it costs an agency $549 a month wholesale, and a typical retail price for that scope is around $1,597. That leaves $1,048 a month, or about 66%, for the agency, per client. You set the retail price, so the margin is your call.

White label vs. outsourcing vs. freelancers

These get lumped together, but they solve different problems. The difference is whose brand the client sees and who is accountable when something slips.

Freelancers can be cheaper per hour, but you become the project manager, QA, and backup when they disappear. A white label partner sells you an outcome and a process, not hours.

What agencies white label most often

Almost any repeatable delivery work can be white labeled. The most common services:

Strategy, client communication, and the sales process are the things agencies keep. Those are the parts that make the client loyal to you rather than to whoever does the execution.

Why agencies use it

Capacity without headcount

Hiring a good SEO or media buyer takes weeks, and you pay for them whether you close three clients that quarter or none. A partner turns that fixed cost into a per-client cost that only exists when revenue does.

A wider menu

Clients prefer one agency to five vendors. White labeling lets a web design shop add SEO, or an SEO agency add paid social, without building a second department.

Predictable margins

Flat wholesale pricing means you know your margin when you write the proposal, not after you've counted the hours.

Speed

An established partner already has the process, templates, and specialists. Work can start days after a client signs, instead of after a recruitment cycle.

The real risks, and how to control them

White labeling fails in predictable ways. Each one has a fix you can write into the arrangement:

  • Quality you can't see. Ask for sample deliverables and a work log, not just a results report. Start with one client before moving your book over.
  • The partner contacts your client. Require a non-solicitation clause and confirm that every touchpoint goes through you.
  • Lock-in. Prefer month-to-month terms, and make sure accounts (Google Business Profile, ad accounts, analytics) stay owned by the client with the partner added as a manager.
  • Reports that don't match reality. Insist on access to the underlying data (Search Console, GA4, ad accounts) so you can verify what the report says.
  • Slow communication. Agree on a named point of contact and response times, ideally inside your own Slack or project tool.

How to choose a white label partner

Before you sign, get clear answers to these questions:

  1. Is pricing published, and is it per client, per task, or per hour?
  2. What's the minimum term, and what notice do you need to leave?
  3. Who is my named contact, and where do we communicate?
  4. What exactly ships each month, and can I see a sample report?
  5. Will you ever contact my clients? Is that in the contract?
  6. Who owns the accounts, files, and content if we part ways?

We compare several established providers against these questions in our comparison of white label SEO companies, and break down typical costs in our guide to white label SEO pricing.

Is white labeling honest?

It's the same subcontracting model used in construction, law, accounting, and software. The client is paying your agency for an outcome and for your judgement, and you remain accountable for both. What matters is that you deliver what you sold and never misrepresent results. If a client asks directly who does the work, tell them: most agencies say they work with specialist partners they manage, and clients rarely mind.

Frequently asked questions

Is white label marketing legal?

Yes. It's a subcontracting arrangement governed by your contract with the partner. Put confidentiality, non-solicitation of your clients, and ownership of deliverables in writing.

Do clients know their agency uses a white label partner?

Usually not, and they don't need to: they're buying an outcome from your agency. If a client asks directly who does the work, don't lie. Most agencies describe partners as part of their team or as specialist partners they manage.

What's the difference between white label and private label?

In marketing services the terms are used interchangeably. Both mean the provider's brand is removed and yours is applied. 'Private label SEO' and 'SEO reseller program' describe the same arrangement.

How much does white label marketing cost?

It depends on the service. Per-client plans for SEO commonly start between roughly $180 and $500 a month wholesale, paid media management a little higher, and web design is usually priced per project.
